Abstract

This article examines the theological dimensions of a belief system held by the community of Sabron Yaru Village, West Sentani District, Jayapura Regency, Papua, in which dogs are regarded as ancestral beings equivalent to humans. This belief is rooted in mythological narratives transmitted orally across generations and gives rise to a taboo against consuming dog meat as an ethical consequence. The study employs a qualitative-descriptive approach with biblical hermeneutics and contextual theology as its primary methods. Analysis is conducted through three lenses: (1) an anthropological review of the functions of mythology and totemism in shaping communal identity, (2) an exegesis of Genesis 1:26-27 affirming humanity's uniqueness as imago Dei, and (3) a missiological reflection on the dialogue between the Gospel and local culture. Findings indicate that this belief contains totemic elements functioning as social solidarity bonds, yet theologically contradicts the doctrine of human creation as distinctly made in the image of God. The study recommends a contextual pastoral approach that is dialogical, inclusive, and transformative, guiding communities toward a fuller understanding of faith without sacrificing their cultural roots.
