Abstract

The transformation of traditional societies into modern societies is a global phenomenon that brings significant changes in social, cultural, economic, and environmental aspects. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the sustainable economy concept in the transition process of communities in South Nias Regency and its surrounding island regions. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using literature reviews, socio-economic observations, and regional development policy analysis to examine the dynamics of modernization and economic sustainability within local communities. The findings indicate that modernization creates opportunities to improve community welfare through the development of tourism, fisheries, agriculture, economic digitalization, and infrastructure. However, this transformation also presents several challenges, including the degradation of local culture, unequal income distribution, exploitation of natural resources, limited access to technology, and changes in the lifestyles of indigenous communities. Therefore, sustainable economic development in South Nias requires the integration of local wisdom, community-based economic empowerment, environmental conservation, and inclusive technological advancement. This study emphasizes the importance of implementing the community sustainable economy model as a development strategy to strengthen community economic independence while preserving cultural identity and ecological balance. Thus, modernization is expected not only to focus on economic growth but also to promote equitable and sustainable community welfare.
